Year Five

WELCOME TO OUR YEAR GROUP'S VIRTUAL PAGE.

Welcome back! We hope you have had a wonderful, restful week and we all can’t wait to see your children’s smiling faces again this morning. Our Year 5 topic is still “Birds” but we have plenty more enriching and exciting lessons planned this half term.

Just a reminder that we have access to ‘myON’ with its library of over 5000 books for the children to read (or it can read to them too). Please encourage your children to use it if they aren’t currently reading anything and then to complete the reading tests to check they’ve understood what they’ve read.

We hope you have a great week and thank you for all your support!

REMOTE EDUCATION UPDATE - DEPARTMENT FOR EDUCATION

The Government have published updated guidance and resources that have been produced by the Department for Education in partnership with the education sector, this includes the BBC.

They have published a list of Online resources that you can access here

Online Educational Resources

These resources cover various subjects and age groups and if you feel it beneficial, may be used to supplement the resources already being set on our eLearning platforms each day.

We are also directing parents to the Department for Education’s - Oak National Academy, which is a new, high-quality collection of lessons and online resources. It has been set up in response to school closures and is supported by the government. From Monday 20 April, it will offer video lessons by teachers for primary and secondary school children in a range of core curriculum subjects.

The National Academy

Also from today the BBC also launching BBC Bitesize Daily.  This is a new service which will deliver a tailored day of learning across BBC iPlayer, Red Button, the BBC Bitesize website and app, BBC Four and BBC Sounds, with curriculum relevant offers across the UK.

Together, this comprehensive package is aimed at minimising disruption to children’s education and providing rhythm and routine in these challenging times.

BBC Bitesize daily lessons

These resources are available to you and are intended to be used in addition to the resources already being set on our eLearning platforms each day by your child’s class teacher.

BBC Parents Toolkit: SEND

The BBC have also created -  Parents' Toolkit: SEND with resources, activities and support to help you and your family during lockdown.

WRITING

THIS WEEKS WRITING TASK

Each week, our English assignments will begin with a spelling, grammar, comprehension or a handwriting starter to ensure the children consolidate their current knowledge but will also learn many new skills from the year 5 curriculum.

This week, for our main sessions, we will begin by looking at some poetry and analysing the language used before moving through the week and exploring more of the poets techniques and styles.

Watch this video regarding poetry and its imagery - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UxASvORGoG4

READING

THIS WEEKS READING TASK

Reading over this period is going to be vital and we would like it to be a big priority for children until we can return to school. Although we will set activities for the children frequently that involve reading, we would also like the children to be reading their own books (or books borrowed from school) with an adult at least 3 times a week. The children can still access Accelerated Reader from home (following the link above) so please encourage them to do so once they have finished their books to test their understanding of what they have read.

At the end of most days, we will also post a story video on Google Classroom for the children to settle down and enjoy.

MATHS

THIS WEEKS MATHS TASK

Each week, our Maths tasks will begin with a starter (Fluent in Five or Rapid Reasoning) where the children will complete quick Maths arithmetic or reasoning questions that should take no longer than 5 minutes - you can access this from the Google Classroom Stream each day. There will then be a focus for the remaining Maths sessions.

This week's focus will continue to be fractions. Please watch this video to get a head start:

There will also be opportunities throughout the week for the children to access TT Rockstars and other number games (e.g. Hit the Button where the children can practise their knowledge of times tables, square numbers, doubles, number bonds, etc.)

NON-CORE

THIS WEEKS NON-CORE TASK

Our non-core tasks this week will be a combination of Science, Geography, DT, PSHE and Happiness. Check your Google Classroom stream each day for the latest updates, tasks and comments from your teachers and friends.
