Our Maths Curriculum will encourage children to develop mathematical understanding in order to solve problems and justify their thinking. It will develop their power of resilience and perse verance when faced with mathematical challenges. We will encourage all children to see Maths as a subject they enjoy and can achieve in. It will show importance of Maths as an essential part of everyday life; this will help to ensure that children see the relevance of what they are learning. We will incorporate sustained levels of challenge through varied and high quality activities with a focus on fluency, reasoning and problem solving. It will also encourage the children to develop their own mental strategies for solving problems and to be confident in this area.
Maths will be taught daily in EYFS, KS1 and KS2. The structure of maths teaching will be based on the National Curriculum guidelines and will cover all the recommended objectives, delivered through sequences that are adapted to meet the children’s needs. Our calculation policy will be used within school to ensure a consistent approach to teaching over time, resulting in the children using the CPA approach to deepen understanding. We intend for all pupils to become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics, including through varied and frequent practice with increasingly complex problems, so that pupils develop conceptual understanding and the ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately. Children will be taught through clear modelling and will have the opportunity to develop their knowledge and understanding of mathematical concepts. Regular assessment will be used to ensure that teaching is adapted to the needs of all the children and to ensure that all children make progress. Children who have shown their understanding at a deep level within each strand, will have opportunities to apply these skills at a greater depth.
The impact of Maths will be measured in terms of the extent to which pupils have developed new knowledge, understanding and skills. We aim for children to be fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics with a conceptual understanding and the ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately. They will have the skills to solve problems by applying their mathematics to a variety of situations with increasing sophistication, including in unfamiliar contexts and to model real-life scenarios. Children will be able to reason mathematically by following a line of enquiry and develop and present justification, argument or proof using mathematical language. Our children will develop enjoyment and confidence in Maths.
